The personal statement is one of the most important components of a UK university application, submitted through UCAS. Here’s what to do, and what to avoid.
Do This
- Dedicate roughly 70 to 80 percent of your statement to academic interest and subject-specific experience.
- Reference specific coursework, independent reading, or projects connected to your intended degree.
- Keep your focus consistent, since one statement goes to all five of your UCAS choices.
- Ask a teacher familiar with your subject to review your draft before submitting.
Avoid This
- Opening with a generic line about “always loving” your subject.
- Listing achievements without explaining what you actually learned from them.
- Writing something vague enough to apply to any subject rather than your specific course.
- Submitting your first draft without revision or outside feedback.
A Note on Character Limits
UCAS statements have a strict character limit, so every sentence needs to earn its place. Cutting generic filler is usually the fastest way to get under the limit without losing substance.
