How International Students Can Start Building a Professional Network

Building a professional network can feel daunting as an international student. Starting early and being intentional makes a real difference by graduation.

  1. Use your university’s resources. Career centers, alumni networks, and department events are often underused, even though they’re designed specifically to connect students with employers.
  2. Use LinkedIn strategically. Reach out to alumni working in roles you’re interested in with a short, specific message rather than a generic connection request.
  3. Attend industry events and student organizations. Professional associations often have student chapters offering events, mentorship, and job boards.
  4. Request informational interviews. A short conversation to learn about someone’s career path, not to ask for a job, is one of the most effective low-pressure networking tools.
  5. Follow up consistently. Send a thank-you after helpful conversations, and check in periodically with updates on your own progress.
